Biomass boilers

Biomass boilers burn wood to heat water for central heating systems. They are a convenient and efficient way to use wood as a fuel, in the form of pellets, chips or logs. They function in a similar way to a conventional boiler, it is just the fuel that is different. The ignition process is automatic, however emptying ash is not, but it doesn’t need to be done very often. The heat generated by the burning the fuel is transferred to a heat exchanger, which then heats water for the central heating and hot water systems.

There’s no denying that the installation cost of a biomass or pellet boiler is quite high by comparison with an oil boiler, but over the long term, it makes sense.  They need quite a lot of space if they have a bulk fuel store, and there needs to be a route for the flue pipe, so they’re often installed in an out-building.  Space is sometimes needed for a buffer tank, which can range in volume from 500 to several thousand litres.  Pre-insulated pipe can be used to deliver energy over quite long distances or to a group of buildings.

As wood fuel is considered renewable and low-carbon, the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) will contribute up to £5,000 towards the installation.

We install, repair and maintain many types of boilers across Wales and the borders. We primarily deal with Biotech, Solarfocus, Ökofen (below), Froeling, ETA and Klover boilers, however we have also worked with many other brands.
